Speed-Running



Hey there, its Rojwal and I'm back with another blog post where I'll be briefly talking about ‘speed-running’.

Basically, speed-running means to complete a game as fast as possible. There are many ways to achieve this and most of the time speed-runners keep certain criteria like playing without leveling up to make their run more difficult and interesting. This phenomenon has become so popular that speed-run tournaments are being held and is now being regarded as an e-sport.

The most common types of speed-running being ‘Any%’ and ’100%’ . Any% is a run where the player takes the shortest route to the final objective, which often requires glitches to skip certain areas or to gain a superior advantage which is impossible to obtain in a normal run.

A 100% speed-run is where the player covers the entire game in the shortest amount of time, it usually consists of obtaining all items, upgrades, fighting all the bosses , finding all secrets and finishing all NPC quest-lines etc.

I was completely blown away when I was first introduced to this concept. Like, ‘Dark Souls’ or the souls series is arguably one the most cruel or difficult game out there, it took me months to even get past the first area of the game. Then, there is this dude who completes it in 39 minutes.

As I became more familiar with the concept, I realized that one needs to plan ahead and requires comprehensive knowledge of the game to even attempt it. The easiest and most fun games to speed-run are Super Mario 64, Sonic the hedgehog 2, Doom, Half-life etc.

While we got ourselves locked indoors, why not pop out some old games and give them a go. Why not choose the weakest weapon, build or add mods to randomize locations and bosses to add more fun. You don't have to speed-run, just relive that experience again. But if you are serious about it, there are tons of videos, guides, glitches and even entire communities based around speed-running a game. So, if you are bored out of your mind, bring out that old game boy , slide in Pokemon gold and choose chikorita instead of cyndaquil or totodile this time.
